Today I am gonna tell you about the health dangers of Fluoride and other nasty ingredients found in commercial toothpastes. I use Weleda’s Calendula toothpaste which smells of Fennel, I am not a big fan of fennel but this works like any other toothpaste and it doesn’t have those nasty chemicals (Free of artificial fragrances, fluoride, preservatives and sulfates.)
Last week I ran out of my toothpaste (my toothpaste from an online store hadn’t arrived) and wasn’t even remotely interested in using the commercial one so I made my own toothpaste at home. Please read what ingredients you should be avoiding in commercial toothpastes before reading the recipe.
Top 3 Toxic Chemicals in Your Toothpaste
If you haven’t taken the time to read the back of your toothpaste label lately then you are in for quite a shock. Most commercial toothpastes still contain not only fluoride but also dangerous ingredients such as Triclosan, Parabens, and SLS. Not only can these chemicals affect your overall health if swallowed in abundance, but in fact they are also considered to be the cause of chin acne in a number of individuals.
There is overwhelming evidence and proof in terms of the danger of fluoride in toothpaste yet it seems to be overly ignored. It seems that finally the FDA is starting to take notice of how much fluoride is put into toothpaste, because of the new warnings that are coming out and proof of issues that it creates.
Besides the dangers in terms of poisoning on the whole, doctors are also linking fluoride use with osteoporosis and an increase in bone issues and fractures among older citizens. Considering the fact that natural toothpaste brings all the benefits that toothpastes with fluoride do, there isn’t any reason to continue supporting toothpaste brands that utilize fluoride. Natural toothpastes can keep your teeth just as clean, keep your teeth white, and fight bad breath as much as popular brand names and highly marketed toothpastes.
The major issue with fluoride in toothpaste is the fact that there is simply no way to understand how much of the chemical you are ingesting each time you brush your teeth. There are very unhealthy limits to ingest and brushing with the types of toothpaste that contain fluoride is simply an unnecessary risk. Instead opt for a toothpaste that is based on a proven formula of natural ingredients and that is entirely free of harmful ingredients and chemicals. See how harmful Fluoride is…
SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) is another culprit that is not only harmful for your teeth but it could also be one of the reasons why you get Chin Acne so often. SLS is used in toothpaste and shampoos as a foaming agent. Try switching to SLS free toothpaste and you will notice lesser chin acne. SLS also triggers Atopic Dermatitis (a type of Eczema) , Contact Dermatitis and Rosacea.
Triclosan is also a debatable ingredient because it might cause some serious health problems, the only reason why it is used in commercial toothpastes is for its anti-batcerial properties. Triclosan is also used in pesticides so you can imagine how harmful it could be for you.
You can read more about the effects of Triclosan on The Washington Post here

2 Tbsp. Baking Soda

This toothpaste not only smells wonderful but is also free from all those harmful chemicals and fillers. You can add Stevia powder if you want it to be sweeter .
Mix everything together and store it in an airtight container. You can add coconut oil just before using it so that its easier to store.
